CSHC’s Parent Engagement Toolkit is a two-part technical assistance tool that includes resources such as fun staff development activities, self-assessment quizzes, best-practice case studies, interviews with leaders in parent engagement, and tips for creative parent engagement techniques. The toolkit is written specifically for school health center directors and staff, and is designed to challenge, inspire, and connect school health centers looking to improve their connection with families and community. | Parents in Action! A Guide to Engaging Parents in Local School Wellness Policy |
| California project LEAN (CPL) conducted a literature review and key informant interviews to answer the following questions: Why do parents participate in school activities? What would get parents involved? What are obstacles in parent participation? This toolkit aims to support parent efforts to improve the school environment with an emphasis on healthy food and physical activity. The Parents in Action! tool includes fact sheets, parent handouts, case studies, and planning templates. |

| Moving Beyond Parent Involvement to Parent Engagement is a toolkit designed by the Michigan Department of Education and gives concrete examples and rubrics outlining how teachers can reach out to parents and make them feel comfortable as partners in their child’s welfare. The tools are easily applicable to school health centers. |

| The California Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) |
| PTA is the one of the nation’s oldest, largest, and highest profile volunteer organization working on behalf of public schools, children, and families. In their official position statement, the California State PTA supports the concept of school-based health centers, believing all children and youth are entitled to physical and mental health care. The PTA website includes information on parent involvement, including culturally competent outreach to families. PTA also offers a guide to Parents Empowering Parents. Membership is required to access some materials, such as best practices for parent engagement. |

Center for Health In Schools: Tools for Parents
Created by the Center for Health in Schools, the Parents' Resource Center provides two types of information: Learn Now, a web portal that provides valuable links to parent-friendly resources on child and adolescent health issues, and Act Now, a guide written by CHHCS to help parents assess health-related services and programs at their child's schools. |

Community Engagement in Public Health (PDF) introduces a conceptual framework for community engagement in public health, highlighting real examples from Contra Costa County in California. It presents the Ladder of Community Participation as a way to illustrate a range of approaches that can be used to engage communities around both traditional and emerging public health issues. The paper is geared toward local health departments, but the arguments apply to school health centers as well. |

The California Center for Civic Participation
This is a nonprofit, nonpartisan program, whose mission is to engage youth in the democratic process by using sound youth development principles. This is accomplished by providing opportunities for middle and high school youth to participate in civic education, leadership, and service programs that directly connect to local, state, and federal issues. SparkAction
SparkAction is an online advocacy and journalism center by and for the child and youth field. The organization is a merger of Connect for Kids, Youth Policy Action Center, and the National Youth Development Information Center. SparkAction continues the work of these three organizations by promoting and producing the highest-quality stories, publications, data, and interactive tools for all youth advocates. UCSF Research
Incorporating Youth-Led Community Participatory Research into School Health Center Programs and Policies. Training adolescents as student researchers is a strategy that can improve the delivery of care at school-based health centers and significantly shift school health policies impacting students. From 2003 to 2006, the University of California, San Francisco, in partnership with Youth In Focus, implemented a participatory student research project to enhance the existing evaluation of the Alameda County SBHC Coalition and its participating clinic members, and to help develop and implement school health policies.
Equal Action
Equal Action is a Los Angeles-based organization that supports lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) youth of color. As a youth-powered, intergenerational, anti-racist organization, Equal Action engages the young LGBT community in multi-sector social justice causes. VISIONS, Inc.
VISIONS, Inc., a nationwide multicultural training and consulting nonprofit, provides organizations and youth development programs with resources on youth leadership through its Youth Engagement Strategies (YES!) Kit. With a multi-cultural lens and a focus on anti-racism and racial equity, the YES! Kit equips organizations and facilitators with a variety activities, trainings, and projects that support youth development and empowerment. The YES! Kit can be purchased through VISIONS, Inc.
In 2009, VISIONS, Inc. also released a short video, "Talking about Race," which documents youth speaking candidly on race, race relations, racial equity, and how such factors tie into youth leadership and development. The video additionally offers six guidelines for inter-generational and cross-cultural discussions on race and other differences. |
