It highlights the need to incorporate nutrition and fitness promotion at all levels, including in clinical exam rooms, SBHCs, classrooms, and the broader school, home, and community. This toolkit contains resources, helpful hints, and case studies designed for various stakeholders, and it incorporates photos, videos, and online resources. This toolkit is a resource guide on navigating the complex interactions of HIPAA and FERPA in school health programs, including SBHCs, school-based mental health programs, school nursing services, and other types of health services delivered on school campuses. This toolkit was developed for CSHC by the National Center for Youth Law. It includes a summary of HIPAA and FERPA, guidelines for determining whether a school health program is subject to HIPAA or FERPA, and detailed information on disclosing and exchanging information under HIPAA and FERPA. The toolkit also includes sample consent and release of information forms and related instructions for school health programs. Note that forms are provided for reference purposes only.

From Vision to Reality: How to Build a School Health Center from the Ground Up

This toolkit on starting an SBHC is a comprehensive resource for anyone seeking to expand health services for students. We hope that it will grow initial sparks of interest into full-fledged SBHCs, regardless of whether it is a school nurse, community clinic, school administrator, or mental health provider who spearheads the process! This toolkit covers many issues commonly of interest to those starting an SBHC, including community planning, youth engagement, health center structure and staffing, funding, SBHC licensing and regulations in California, operations, facilities, and evaluation. CSHC’s Parent Engagement Toolkit is a two-part technical assistance tool that includes resources such as fun staff development activities, self-assessment quizzes, best-practice case studies, interviews with leaders in parent engagement, and tips for creative parent engagement techniques. The toolkit is written specifically for school health center directors and staff, and is designed to challenge, inspire, and connect school health centers looking to improve their connection with families and community.

Third Party Billing: A Manual for California’s School Health Centers

It provides tips on how to develop/improve billing practices and effectively submit billing claims. The manual covers billing for primary care services, reproductive health services, and services provided by school districts. Sample forms and effective practices for billing within the managed care system are also provided. The manual was developed jointly by CSHC and LA Care Health Plan.
