The California School Health Centers Association has developed a series of fact sheets and other handouts designed to provide information about the benefits of school health centers to a variety of audiences, including parents, school officials, community members, elected officials, business leaders, funders and anyone else whom you want to join the movement to put health care where kids are. The toolkits help with starting and sustaining school health centers in California. You will also find these publications throughout our website within their corresponding topic areas. • H.E.L.P. (Healthy Eating, Learning, and Playing) at School.
This toolkit contains resources, helpful hints, and case studies for a variety of stakeholders in nutrition and physical activity promotion where kids are -- at school. This toolkit focuses on the importance of collaboration between clinicians, school health center staff, school staff, families, and the community in combating childhood obesity. This is a multimedia toolkit, incorporating photos, video, text, and online resources. CSHC provides this toolkit on DVD at no charge to its members and for a suggested $35 donation to the public.

•  HIPAA or FERPA? A Primer on School Health Information Sharing in California. CSHC is pleased to offer this essential resource guide on navigating the complex interactions of HIPAA and FERPA in school health programs, including school health centers, school-based mental health programs, school nursing services, and other types of health services delivered on school campuses. We developed this guide to help schools and community providers clarify what student health information can be shared with whom, under a variety of circumstances. The information in this toolkit and the sample forms can facilitate improved communication and coordination of student health services among school district and community health services providers. CSHC provides this toolkit at no charge to its members and for a suggested $35 donation to the public.

From Vision to Reality: How to Build a School Health Center from the Ground Up. This 140-page toolkit covers the topics of: community planning, youth engagement, health center structure and staffing, school health center funding, school health center licensing and regulations in California, operations, facilities, and evaluation. The toolkit also contains sample job descriptions, clinic floor plans, consent forms, surveys and other resource materials. CSHC provides this toolkit at no charge to its members and for a suggested $35 donation to the public.

•  Parent Engagement Toolkit. This is a 2-volume magazine-style technical assistance tool that includes resources such as staff development activities, self-assessment quizzes, best-practice case studies, interviews with leaders in parent engagement, and tips for creative parent engagement techniques. The toolkit is written specifically for school health center directors and staff, and is designed to challenge, inspire, and connect school health centers looking to improve their connection with families and community. CSHC provides this toolkit at no charge to its members and for a suggested $35 donation to the public.

•  Third Party Billing: A Manual for California’s School Health Centers. This manual is intended to help increase billing revenue and strengthen sustainability, and to aid those starting a school health center to understand potential sources of revenue. The manual covers billing for primary care services, reproductive health services, and services provided by school districts. Sample forms and effective practices for billing within the managed care system are also provided. The manual was developed jointly by CSHC and LA Care Health Plan, and is available free of charge.
