Toolkit to Reduce Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Care

Research has documented the persistent gaps in health care quality that affect Americans from specific racial and ethnic backgrounds. A new toolkit released by the National Health Plan Collaborative provides resources, lessons, case studies, and videos to help health plans identify and reduce disparities within their memberships. The toolkit is hosted on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation website.

 
Caring Across Cultures: Achieving Cultural Competence in Health Programs at School

An introduction to resources and research on cultural competence in health programs at schools, has been added to the Health In Schools website.

 
Ethnic Medicine Information
The EthnoMed website of the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle contains information about cultural beliefs, medical issues and other related issues pertinent to the health care of recent immigrants to the US, many of whom are refugees fleeing war-torn parts of the world.
 
DiversityRx
Promoting language and cultural competence to improve the quality of health care for minority, immigrant, and ethnically diverse communities, Diversity Rx provides information on models and practices, policy, legal issues, networking and resources for policymakers, health care providers, and consumer representatives.
 
  Journal of Transcultural Nursing  
  Dedicated to the advancement of culturally competent and culturally congruent health care, the Journal of Transcultural Nursing discusses important topics concerning the relationship among culture, nursing and other disciplines, and the delivery of health care that affect nursing and health care clinical practice, research, education, and theory development.  
     
  Cultural Competency Toolkit for Mental Health Services  
  The National Consumer Supporter Technical Assistance Center (NCSTA) has gathered ten case studies of model programs for cultural competence among organizations offering mental health services. Project goals and implementation plans are shared, and program materials are included in the toolkit.  
     
  "Culture Clues" Tip Sheets  
  Culture Clues are tip sheets for clinicians, designed to increase awareness about concepts and preferences of patients from diverse cultures. Culture Clues were created by the Patient and Education Family Services at the University of Washington Medical Center.

  Meeting the Needs of Patients with Limited English
 
 

A new Commonwealth Fund report, "Providing Language Services in Small Health Care Provider Settings: Examples from the Field", shows how a number of community health centers around the country have found creative methods for meeting the needs of patients with limited English proficiency (LEP). The report includes an eight-step plan to help providers develop a strategy to meet the needs of their LEP patients and the community.

Another resource comes from The Access Project and the National Health Law Program have jointly developed a Language Services Action Kit that can help people with limited English proficiency gain better access to health care. Designed for immigrant advocates, hospitals, health care providers, and other organizations, the kit explains how to apply for federal funds that will defray the cost of providing patients with translation and other language services. An additional resource is a survey of community health centers that serve patients with limited English proficiency.

 
     
  Immunization Patient Information in 32 Languages  
  The Immunization Action Coalition provides information materials on various vaccinations (PDF downloads) for parents and their children in 32 different languages, ranging from Amharic to Vietnamese. The materials are reviewed by the Centers for Disease Control for accuracy.  
     
  Babelfish Translation– Online Text Translator  
  The Babelfish website can translate basic phrases of text from a variety of languages, including Chinese, Greek, Portuguese, French, and Spanish. This is a helpful resource for translating web pages, although the website has a difficult time translating complex phrases.  
     
  “Crecer con Salud” – Guide for Spanish-Speaking Parents  
 

The California HealthCare Foundation and La Opinión have released Growing Up Healthy (Crecer con Salud), with information on preventive health, chronic disease, nutrition, and safety. Issues covered include Proper nutrition and its role in dealing with obesity; Caring for children with diabetes or asthma; and Guidance for maintaining emotional health.
