Toolkit to Reduce Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Care

Research has documented the persistent gaps in health care quality that affect Americans from specific racial and ethnic backgrounds. A new toolkit released by the National Health Plan Collaborative provides resources, lessons, case studies, and videos to help health plans identify and reduce disparities within their memberships. Caring Across Cultures: Achieving Cultural Competence in Health Programs at School

  Meeting the Needs of Patients with Limited English
 
 

A new Commonwealth Fund report, "Providing Language Services in Small Health Care Provider Settings: Examples from the Field", shows how a number of community health centers around the country have found creative methods for meeting the needs of patients with limited English proficiency (LEP). The report includes an eight-step plan to help providers develop a strategy to meet the needs of their LEP patients and the community.

Another resource comes from The Access Project and the National Health Law Program have jointly developed a Language Services Action Kit that can help people with limited English proficiency gain better access to health care. Designed for immigrant advocates, hospitals, health care providers, and other organizations, the kit explains how to apply for federal funds that will defray the cost of providing patients with translation and other language services.

  Immunization Patient Information in 32 Languages  
  The Immunization Action Coalition provides information materials on various vaccinations (PDF downloads) for parents and their children in 32 different languages, ranging from Amharic to Vietnamese.   ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina!  
  The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has developed a bilingual initiative for Hispanic girls ages 9-14, and their mothers and other caregivers. This public education initiative, called "¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina!" is designed to help them build and enhance their own self-esteem, mental health, decision-making and assertiveness skills, and to prevent the harmful consequences of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs.   “Crecer con Salud” – Guide for Spanish-Speaking Parents  
 

The California HealthCare Foundation and La Opinión have released Growing Up Healthy (Crecer con Salud), with information on preventive health, chronic disease, nutrition, and safety.
