Nutrition & Physical Activity: Classroom Curricula

Improving Nutrition and Physical Activity

The number of overweight children and youth has increased to reach epidemic levels in the United States. Many children come to school everyday suffering from obesity-related conditions that seriously impact their ability to learn and succeed in school. School-based interventions have been identified as one of the most efficient means to reduce chronic disease risks. In order to help school health centers address this issue, CSHC has developed a new Factsheet, “Improving Nutrition and Physical Activity.” This resource provides information on model program components, staffing, keys to success, and evaluation measures. Also included are profiles of 8 innovative programs that are addressing the health needs of students all over California in fun and creative ways.

Jump Start Teens - Lesson Plans

With the goal of addressing many students' poor attention spans, partly the result of skipped meals and inactivity, Jump Start Teens encourages students to eat healthy, move, and become advocates. Jump Start Teens is an interactive cross-curricular lesson-kit for high school teachers and school nutrition staff. Lessons, worksheets, and stand-alone activities support team building among teachers, coaches and nutritional staff, as well as parents, local business, and the greater community.

SPARK – School-Based Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids

Dedicated to improving the quantity and quality of physical activity for children and teachers, SPARK creates, implements, and evaluates programs that promote lifelong wellness. The SPARK program offers six evaluated curricula available to engage students in developmentally appropriate physical activity. They provide schools or agencies with curriculum, training, on-going support, and equipment. The research and evaluation of the SPARK has helped to strengthen the link between health and learning and is bringing Physical Education back to many schools and districts.

Establishing School-Based Best Practices in Nutrition and Physical Activity

Criteria for Evaluating School-Based Approaches to Increasing Good Nutrition and Physical Activity is a comprehensive tool for evaluating school-based approaches to increasing children's physical activity and improving nutrition. The criteria were developed by Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) in response to the Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity. The report presents a description of the methodology for developing the evaluation criteria, lists the actual criteria, and suggests incentives for motivating action among stakeholders. The report is intended for use by policymakers, educators, researchers, and others in measuring the potential effectiveness and adoptability of a broad range of policies, programs, interventions, and practices. Planet Health—A Health Education Program for School Children
(Grades 4-8)

Focused on improving physical activity and diet, Planet Health curriculum incorporates health education into language arts, math, science, social studies, and physical education classes for 6th–8th graders. The innovative curriculum was developed by the Harvard School of Public Health and implemented in field trials by teachers and kids. The curriculum was tested and evaluated in six of Boston 's inner-city middle schools where about 90% of teachers who trained in and used it believed it had a good effect on their students and wanted to continue teaching it. The results were exciting: Planet Health was instrumental in reducing obesity and television viewing time and increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables. The materials are designed to fit within existing curricula and include teacher trainings, planning tools, 32 classroom lessons, and fun classroom activities. These materials have been measured for readability by National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Planet Health is a tested intervention.
