Join us at the 2020 California School Health Conference in Sacramento and speak up for more school-based health. On Thursday, May 14, we will be hosting our semi-annual School Health Advocacy Day so you can meet with legislators and their staff and tell them about the important work you do to support healthy students.
Why is Advocacy Day important?
Legislators and policymakers need to hear from you – experts on the ground – to learn about the importance of school-based health. One of the best ways to gain support for better resourced and comprehensive school health services is to share what you know – and see every day – that makes this work so important.
When is it? If I attend, can I also go to a pre-conference workshop?
Thursday, May 14, from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. Pre-conference workshops start at 2 pm so you can do both!
Does it cost anything to participate?
Advocacy Day is free with your conference registration. Lunch is also included and you’ll get a special T-shirt after completing your advocacy visits.
Will I be lobbying? I don’t think I can participate if I lobby.
While we will be asking legislators to take positions on policies (which is lobbying), an important part of these meetings is just educating policymakers about school-based health (not lobbying). If you have restrictions on lobbying, we will work with you and your team to make sure you can participate.
I’ve never done this before. How will I know what to do and say?
We will host webinars prior to Advocacy Day that will help you prepare for your visits. You will also be in a team with other advocates so you can support each other. Plus, the most important part of these visits is sharing information that you already know – about the work you do, the students you serve, and the need you see for school-based health.
