Subject: Fund School-Based Health Centers and Improve Children’s Lives
Dear Secretary Sebelius:
[Your organization’s name] is joining with the California School Health Centers Association, the National Assembly on School-Based Health Care, and other children’s advocates in urging your support for a $50 Million appropriation, in the President’s FY 2014 budget, dedicated exclusively to school-based health center (SBHC) operations.
California is home to 200 of the nation’s nearly 2,000 SBHCs. These centers provide primary and preventive health care to more than 200,000 students in California and 2 million students nationally – regardless of their ability to pay – in a location that meets children and adolescents where they are: at school.
$50 Million in federal funds for SBHCs would ensure countless children:
** receive their first oral health examination to protect against cavities
** get ongoing diet and fitness counseling to avoid early onset of diabetes
** are diverted from emergency rooms because of effective disease management
** receive counseling and support to prevent tobacco addiction
** are screened and treated for depression
State governments, foundations, and the private sector have invested in school-based health care because it works. The federal government can ensure long-term success for SBHCs by contributing to a foundation of consistent and reliable funding.
Thank you for your consideration.
